Silver Stars defeat the St. Croix's on July fourth

The annual July 4th match between the St. Croix Base Ball Club and the Northfield Silver Stars took place at the village of Northfield near the College of St. Olaf with threatening skies and a hint of rain in the air.

The two clubs met on the field and with the flip of a coin, by umpire Mr. Cagley, the St. Croix's won the toss and decided to strike first.

The Northfield Club played excellent defense and even after the St. Croix's had a player at each base, the Silver Stars were able to avoid even one St. Croix player from crossing home base. In their half of the first inning some strong hitting had the Northfield boys up by the score of 2 to zero after the first inning.

The second inning had St. Croix right fielder Mr. Douglas "Freight Train" Ernst hit a hard ball to right field and with an unusual bounce the ball went past the usually sure handed Northfield fielder. Mr. Ernst, with his flowing white hair blowing in the breeze, scampered all the way to third base - truly a sight to be seen. Mr. Ernst would later score and help the St. Croix's cut the lead of the Northfield club in half.

The following inning more strong hitting by the St. Croix's lead to two more aces being tallied for the visiting club. With the additional hits, the visitors had a lead of 3 to 2. However, in their half of the third inning, the Silver Stars pushed across another run to tie the score at three apiece after three innings.

The score stood tied until the Northfield Club put several big hits together to tally once and the Silver Stars taking the lead 4 to 3.

The St. Croix's could not find the stroke of the bat anymore, all hard hits going to the sure handed fielders of the Silver Stars. The end of the match found the score 5 to 3 in favore of the home club.

For the St. Croix's aces were tallied by Mr. Ernst as mentioned, and Mr. Wittrock and Mr. Ebnet.

A return match is scheduled for September.
