Please send an email to: information@wchsmn.org or call 651-439-5956 to RSVP.\nPROGRAM INFO: \nDavid Geister and his wife Pat Bauer will do a presentation built around their 2019 Artist in Residence 5-week stay on the Gettysburg Battlefield. They will use slides and some live music performance on Pat’s part to share the paintings\, songs and poetry created while there. \nOn July 2\, 1863\, the 1st Minnesota Regiment\, including Company B from Stillwater and the St. Croix Valley\, found themselves at Cemetery Ridge\, and with orders to charge an oncoming group of confederates to hold them off until Union reinforcements could arrive. The Minnesotan’s were outnumbered\, out gunned\, but with the suicide charge helped to block the charge of the Southern forces and saved the battle of Gettysburg for the North. \nGeister is a Minneapolis\, Minnesota-based artist specializing in historical art\, picture book illustrations and landscape paintings. Much of his childhood revolved around drawing\, reading\, playing with toy soldiers or dressing up in historic costume.  It seems that some things don’t change\, and it turns out\, it’s all about storytelling. \nHe received an education in Visual Merchandising from the Dakota County Technical College and spent 4 years as a United States Marine\, where he was a graphic specialist and illustrator. \nA decade working as a costumed interpreter at Historic Fort Snelling allowed Geister to share his passion for history and led to a continuing artistic relationship with the Minnesota Historical Society.  It is also where he met my wife\, author and teacher\, Patricia Bauer. \nDavid Geister at Gettysburg Military Park

SUMMARY:The History of Schaar's Bluff with Herb Reckinger
DESCRIPTION:Herb Reckinger\, Jr. from the South Washington Heritage Society presented on the history of Schaar’s Bluff County Park (located in Dakota County west of Hastings). Reckinger has done impressive research on the geological elements that characterize the area. What does Schaar’s Bluff have to do with us? Everything! From the park overlook\, there is one of the finest views from that end of Washington County- the Mississippi River\, Spring Lake\, Cottage Grove and the Grey Cloud Islands. Remember- the bedrock is the same in all parts of our county. We have many fine features that are not repeated elsewhere. Herb presented on the Mississippi River Commission maps of the 1890s\, the bedrock geology of our area\, and the glaciers that made all of this happen.

DESCRIPTION:  \n\n \n\n\n \nGary Goodman presents on his book “The Last Bookseller: A Life in the Rare Book Trade”! \n\nABOUT THE BOOK: \nAbout “The Last Bookseller”:\n\nWhen Gary Goodman wandered into a run-down\, used-book shop that was going out of business in East St. Paul in 1982\, he had no idea the visit would change his life. He walked in as a psychiatric counselor and walked out as the store’s new owner. In The Last Bookseller Goodman describes his sometimes desperate\, sometimes hilarious career as a used and rare book dealer in Minnesota—the early struggles\, the travels to estate sales and book fairs\, the remarkable finds\, and the bibliophiles\, forgers\, book thieves\, and book hoarders he met along the way. \nHere we meet the infamous St. Paul Book Bandit\, Stephen Blumberg\, who stole 24\,000 rare books worth more than fifty million dollars; John Jenkins\, the Texas rare book dealer who (probably) was murdered while standing in the middle of the Colorado River; and the eccentric Melvin McCosh\, who filled his dilapidated Lake Minnetonka mansion with half a million books. In 1990\, with a couple of partners\, Goodman opened St. Croix Antiquarian Books in Stillwater\, one of the Twin Cities region’s most venerable bookshops until it closed in 2017. This store became so successful and inspired so many other booksellers to move to town that Richard Booth\, founder of the “book town” movement in Hay-on-Wye in Wales\, declared Stillwater the First Book Town in North America. \nThe internet changed the book business forever\, and Goodman details how\, after 2000\, the internet made stores like his obsolete. In the 1990s\, the Twin Cities had nearly fifty secondhand bookshops; today\, there are fewer than ten. As both a memoir and a history of booksellers and book scouts\, criminals and collectors\, The Last Bookseller offers an ultimately poignant account of the used and rare book business during its final Golden Age. \n\nCheck out “The Last Bookseller” website for more information and to order your copy!

Since 2008\, a herd of juvenile males from Northstar Bison has taken up summer residence at one of our tallgrass prairie restorations. Their presence has been transformative. \nToday\, the balance and abundance of wildlife\, grasses\, and flowers on Belwin’s bison prairie is second to none\, thanks to this majestic creature. Belwin Restoration Specialist Lynette Anderson explains: “their grazing patterns promote the growth of different flowers\, which brings in different insects\, which bring in different birds\, and so on and so forth. And that’s the importance of disturbance on a prairie: to keep this vital\, dynamic\, beautiful habitat going.” – Belwin Conservatory

DESCRIPTION:EVENT INFO: \nWhat effect do humans and fire have on forests? Author Jeff Forester gives a program about his book “The Forest for the Trees: How Humans Shaped the Northwoods.” This history of human relationship with the land starting with native Americans through the pioneering logging\, the rise of industrial logging\, creation of the United States Forest Service and finally the creation of a designated wilderness is visible in Minnesota. So to the story of wildfire is told in full in Minnesota\, from tribal fire regimes to reduce fire intensity and provide habitat for blueberries and wildlife\, through catastrophic fires that killed hundreds in an afternoon\, to the near eradication of fire for the first time since the last ice age\, to fire reasserting itself on the landscape. By examining the Minnesota’s forests we can see the full history of how humans shaped the northwoods. Jeff Forester is a freelance writer whose work has been published in Whole Earth Review\, Rolling Stone\, Oregon Quarterly\, and Timberline. He is executive director of a nonprofit organization and an instructor at Concordia University in St. Paul.

DESCRIPTION:EVENT INFO: \nFrom Fritz Anderson: \nThe Red River Métis is a community of the Minnesota’s early settlers of Minnesota that came from the OTHER direction of many settlers of the day. Early Minnesotan history had many settlers that came from the Northwest\, rather than the East.  This intriguing group came from the Red River Valley of northwestern Minnesota and what is now Southern Manitoba.  The Métis were an entirely new society that were of Native and White ancestry but subscribed to being neither. A new people that were distinctive in American history as being the only example of a new culture with a unique language and strong social identity that arose from a combination of many peoples. \nThe Washington County Heritage Center will be open at 6pm for event attendees to experience the museum prior to the event at 7pm. Anderson\, whose book was a significant resource in the exhibit’s content\, presented on her book A Bag Worth a Pony: The Art of the Ojibwe Bandolier Bag. Marcia Anderson was curator of the Minnesota Historical Society’s museum collections for 30 years. \n\nCopies of A Bag Worth a Pony: The Art of the Ojibwe Bandolier Bag are available online at our store and in-person at the Heritage Center store.\n \nABOUT THE BOOK:\n\nBandolier bags\, or gashkibidaaganag—the large\, heavily beaded shoulder bags made and worn by several North American Indian tribes around the Great Lakes—are prized cultural icons here and around the world. From the 1870s to the present day\, Ojibwe bead artists of Minnesota have been especially well known for their lively\, creative designs. Neighboring Dakota people would trade a pony for a beautiful beaded bag. \n \nOver the years\, non-Indian collectors and ethnographers\, struck by the bags’ cultural significance and visual appeal\, bought them up. Today\, there are hundreds of bags in museums around the world\, but not so many in the hands of community members. In A Bag Worth a Pony\, Marcia G. Anderson shares the results of thirty years of study\, in which she learned from the talented bead artists who keep the form alive\, from historical records\, and from the bags themselves. \n \nAnderson examines the history\, forms\, structure\, and motifs of the bags\, giving readers the tools to understand a bag’s makeup and meaning. He served as a leader of Minnesota Army National Guard soldiers who participated in the evacuation of Hamid Karzai International Airport in August 2021. He returned from deployment earlier this year. \nAfter over two years of training and preparation\, in March 2021 the Minnesota National Guard’s 1st Combined Arms Battalion was activated and sent to Kuwait\, prepositioned by the US Army to serve as the Regional Response Force in case of a crisis in the Middle East during its deployment. \nWith just six hours’ notice\, Captain Anderson and a 400-soldier element was sent to Hamid Karzai International Airport to help protect the evacuation of US citizens\, families and allies while under constant threat from both the Taliban and ISIS-Khorasan. Between August 14 and August 31\, 2021\, more than 123\,000 people were evacuated following the collapse of Afghanistan’s central government. It is the largest noncombatant evacuation in U.S. military history.
