SUMMARY:"AND IN THIS CORNER\, from PARTS UNKNOWN" with wrestling historian George Schire
DESCRIPTION:WHO WAS THAT MASKED MAN? \nOn April 2\, 2024 at 6:30pm wrestling historian and author George Schire returns to the Washington County Heritage Center to share the identities and stories of wrestling’s mystery men.\n \nIn the old territory days of professional wrestling\, there was a highly populated city called\, “Parts Unknown”.  It couldn’t be found on any map\, because no one knew where it was located.  It was as mysterious as the wrestlers who were billed from this seemingly lost city.  \n \nEven more intriguing was that these wrestlers were all masked!  Their faces covered so they couldn’t be recognized for a variety of given reasons. \n \nWrestling fans were told by promoters that they didn’t know who these masked hombre’s were.  They didn’t know their names\, their weights\, or anything else about them.  And the fans bought it and ate it up! \n \nJOIN US APRIL 2ND for this behind the scenes visit to “Parts Unknown”.   \n\nIn-person attendees:\n1862 Greeley Street South\nStillwater\, MN 55082\nVirtual attendees:\nLink to WCHS YouTube page\n\nAbout George: \n \nAs a kid\, Schire found a way to escape the troubles of his life by becoming a wrestling fan\, glued to the TV set and then later traveling to see every live “card” in the Twin Cities and many more throughout the region. Over the years he has been involved in all aspects of the sport\, and he now offers detailed\, behind-the-scenes accounts of important matches from 1954 to 1990 and stories of wrestler personalities\, both in and out of the ring. He shares his own extensive collection of wrestling memorabilia— photographs\, program covers\, newspaper clippings\, and other ephemera—to honor the hardworking characters who forged serial storylines onstage week after week and who thrilled fans by carrying out their plots in the ring\, with blood\, sweat\, tears\, and high-flying body slams for all.

SUMMARY:Balancing on a Hair with Evonne Bilotta-Burke and JoJamba Matthews
DESCRIPTION:Art by Ariel Rucker-Ehlers via the LA Times \n\n \nHair.\n \nA natural part of who we are\, how we present in the world\, and the understanding of why it is so personal to individuals and racial groups around the world.\n \nHair\, especially for Black\, African\, and African-American women\, has traditionally been subject to interrogation and judgment by non-Black racial groups as a way to demean and control. Sometimes\, what seems like an idle conversation can be triggering and negatively impact individuals. We would like to bring clarity to the topic of hair and discuss how we can shift future conversations. \n \nAlso\, we have passed the one-year anniversary of Minnesota passing the Crown Act on Feb 1st\, 2023.\n\nThe CROWN Act was created in 2019 by Dove and the CROWN Coalition\, in partnership with then State Senator Holly J. Mitchell of California\, to ensure protection against discrimination based on race-based hairstyles by extending statutory protection to hair texture and protective styles such as braids\, locs\, twists\, and knots in the workplace and public schools. \nhttps://www.thecrownact.com/\n\n \nPresented by Evonne Bilotta-Burke and JoJamba Matthews\n \nTo encourage a supportive environment for open conversation and discussion\, this presentation will be available in person only.\n\nAttend in-person at:\n1862 Greeley Street South\nStillwater\, MN 55082

SUMMARY:Black Pioneers of Washington County with Brent Peterson
DESCRIPTION: \n\nWCHS Executive Director Brent Peterson will be presenting stories about Black pioneers in the St. Croix Valley and the early trails that they blazed in a multitude of social and entrepreneurial arenas. Among these stories is a man named Charles Jackson\, a newly freed slave turned businessman who followed the Minnesota Regiment to Stillwater after the Civil War concluded. Jackson began his career at the Sawyer House and eventually opened his own barbershop on Main Street. Another man who followed the Regiment to Minnesota was Jim Carter\, who became a custodian and one of Stillwater’s most beloved residents. When Jim passed away\, his funeral was the most well attended service anyone in town had ever seen. Caroline Lindsey was another early notable citizen. She and her sisters were artists who displayed their pieces at the Louisville Fair in 1897. Caroline was Stillwater High School’s first Black graduate\, finishing her studies in 1898. \n\n \n\nIn-person attendees:\n1862 Greeley Street South\nStillwater\, MN 55082\nVirtual attendees:\nLink to WCHS YouTube page\n\nCaroline Lindsey pictured with her high school graduating class \nCharles Jackson \nJim Carter (center) with Union soldiers

SUMMARY:The Last Man's Club of Company B with Mike Frain
DESCRIPTION:Charles Lockwood \nA bittersweet tradition that stemmed from the Civil War was an organization called The Last Man’s Club. Civil War reenactor and longtime WCHS volunteer Mike Frain will present on this club that began as a group of friends and became legendary. \nThe men of Company B of the First Minnesota Volunteer Infantry Regiment were 101 strong when they left for battle\, and sadly only 34 of them survived. After the 34 men gathered together Stillwater in 1885\, they decided to make the reunion an annual thing.  \nThe group called themselves The Last Man’s Club\, and agreed to meet each year on July 21 — the anniversary of the Battle of Bull Run — until only one of them was left. The last remaining man would drink a toast to his departed comrades from an expensive bottle of Burgundy wine that was to remain unopened until that day. \nThe last remaining man was Charles Lockwood\, who raised his glass in 1930 to his fellow comrades. Lockwood stood alone at the end of a long table at the Lowell Inn\, where each of the chairs – except Lockwood’s – were draped with black.  \n“When we formed the club\, we thought the agreement rather funny\,” Lockwood told the St. Paul Dispatch at the time. “After our experiences in the war we had no fear of death. But now that I am last I see no humor in it.” \nAttend in-person at the Washington County Heritage Center or virtually on YouTube. SUMMARY:"Bridge Over Troubled Water" with author and retired law enforcement officer L.C. Simon
DESCRIPTION:L.C. Simon releases his new book “Bridge Over Troubled Water\,” a fictional piece based on true events from his decades in law enforcement working on behalf of children. \nHosted in partnership with Valley Bookseller\, who will have Simon’s book available for purchase at the event.\n \nFree!\nAttend in-person OR on Zoom (see Zoom link below)\n \nABOUT THE BOOK: \nRetired detective Jack Janssen is tormented not by the hundreds of child abuse investigations under his gun belt but by a single case. One case that not only keeps him up nights but gives him night terrors. \nDeciding to retire early\, he struggles with his subconscious as he tries to figure out where he goes in life from here. Suddenly he finds himself drawn back into his old life and begins to get a glimpse of what the rest of his life has in store for him. \n  \nABOUT THE AUTHOR: \n \nMy career in law enforcement span twenty seven years\, with seventeen of those years focused exclusively on child abuse investigation. I was also a contract employee for the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension for ten years\, teaching other law enforcement across the state the unique techniques used in this specialized field. \nAfter retirement\, my wife and I traveled the country in a motorhome\, and for twelve years spent our summers living and working in Voyageurs National Park. \nI have never lost my dedication to the cause of children\, and recently decided to spend some time writing novels that draw from my experience in law enforcement while highlighting the problem of child abuse in our country. I think I hit the mark; making a fun interesting read and informing at the same time. \n  \nZOOM INFO: \nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/87939627099?pwd=dVJPZzMvdTZKSGNuY1VjdW1xM2x5Zz09 \nMeeting ID: 879 3962 7099\nPasscode: history \n

He walked in as a psychiatric counselor and walked out as the store’s new owner. In The Last Bookseller Goodman describes his sometimes desperate\, sometimes hilarious career as a used and rare book dealer in Minnesota—the early struggles\, the travels to estate sales and book fairs\, the remarkable finds\, and the bibliophiles\, forgers\, book thieves\, and book hoarders he met along the way. \nHere we meet the infamous St. Paul Book Bandit\, Stephen Blumberg\, who stole 24\,000 rare books worth more than fifty million dollars; John Jenkins\, the Texas rare book dealer who (probably) was murdered while standing in the middle of the Colorado River; and the eccentric Melvin McCosh\, who filled his dilapidated Lake Minnetonka mansion with half a million books. In 1990\, with a couple of partners\, Goodman opened St. Croix Antiquarian Books in Stillwater\, one of the Twin Cities region’s most venerable bookshops until it closed in 2017. This store became so successful and inspired so many other booksellers to move to town that Richard Booth\, founder of the “book town” movement in Hay-on-Wye in Wales\, declared Stillwater the First Book Town in North America. \nThe internet changed the book business forever\, and Goodman details how\, after 2000\, the internet made stores like his obsolete. In the 1990s\, the Twin Cities had nearly fifty secondhand bookshops; today\, there are fewer than ten. As both a memoir and a history of booksellers and book scouts\, criminals and collectors\, The Last Bookseller offers an ultimately poignant account of the used and rare book business during its final Golden Age. \n\nCheck out “The Last Bookseller” website for more information and to order your copy! \n  \nZOOM INFO: \nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/87126480488?pwd=dWlTVzV6RU83SlpJL3JBVVdqZ2VjZz09 \nMeeting ID: 871 2648 0488\nPasscode: history

SUMMARY:"Images of America: Forest Lake" book talk with Justin Brink
DESCRIPTION:Book cover \nAuthor and historian Justin Brink is joining us to share his BRAND-NEW BOOK “Images of America: Forest Lake”! Books will be available for purchase at the event. Come learn about Forest Lake’s exciting history!  \nAbout the book: \nLike so many of the places that lined the route from St. Paul to Duluth\, Forest Lake came of age as a railroad town and was first incorporated as a township in 1874. Situated on a lake by the same name\, it soon became known as a resort town where many residents from the Twin Cities could leave their cares behind for some fishing and sunbathing. Because of its secluded nature\, it also attracted well-known gangsters of the era. Minnesota native George “Bugs” Moran had a hideout near the lake\, as did the Ma Barker gang. As the resort traffic dried up\, progress soon took over\, and with it came residential development and downtown revitalization. Today\, Forest Lake’s population has increased nearly twentyfold and continues to attract visitors to its pristine lakes. \nAbout the author: \nJustin Brink is president of the Forest Lake Historical Society and a lifelong Forest Lake resident. He serves as a planning commissioner for the city and is a registered nurse by profession. For this book\, images have been collected from the Forest Lake Historical Society\, the Washington County Historical Society\, and the community. \n  \nAttend in-person at the Washington County Heritage Center OR virtually on Zoom. \nZoom Info: \nClick here to join the Zoom meeting \nMeeting ID: 812 4364 7160\nPasscode: history

SUMMARY:Celebrating Swiss Heritage in the St. Croix Valley
DESCRIPTION:Curious about some of Stillwater’s oldest immigrants? \nJoin us for a special event at the Washington County Heritage Center\, celebrating the rich Swiss heritage and stories in Minnesota\, particularly in Stillwater and the Twin Cities. Save the date: Sunday\, August 27\, from noon to 2pm! \nThe highlight of this event is the screening of “IN’AVENTURA AMERICANA\,” a captivating documentary that sheds light on the Swiss Romansh immigration to Minnesota with a particular focus on the Stillwater area. The video follows the adventures of two Swiss gentlemen\, starting in Stillwater\, venturing to other parts of the Twin Cities\, and to Badus\, South Dakota. A contingency of the Stillwater Swiss ventured off to create a planned community. The Badus community of Swiss Romansh was studied as to how it was established and functioned. Swiss Romansh immigrants\, alongside other immigrant groups\, played a pivotal role in establishing businesses throughout the St. Croix Valley\, contributing to job opportunities\, and fostering a sense of community for the newcomers. \nWhat’s even more thrilling is that several members of the documentary team will be joining us live via Zoom from Switzerland. They will participate in discussions and eagerly answer any questions you may have about the film. Additionally\, the event will feature a delightful array of memorabilia and artifacts\, and authentic Swiss cuisine. It promises to be a festive and celebratory gathering! \nThe main objective for this event is to pay homage to Swiss ancestors\, spark meaningful conversations\, and share the remarkable stories of the families that shaped this area we call home today. \nWe warmly encourage you to seize this opportunity to immerse yourself in local history and heritage. We look forward to your presence at this memorable occasion! \nWe are encouraging everyone to come in-person if possible\, but we’re also happy to have attendees on Zoom! \nZOOM INFO \nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/82442144044?pwd=UVlmSjZ6aWVWc1ArdUtOdHZVQWVoUT09 \nMeeting ID: 824 4214 4044\nPasscode: swiss

SUMMARY:The Lure of the Pearl Button with Robyn Stoller
DESCRIPTION:St. Croix Pearl Button Factory workers on pile of shells \n \nThe story of freshwater mussels and the pearl button industry in St. Croix and Mississippi river valleys\nIn the late 19th and early 20th centuries\, more than a lumber boom was occurring in the St. Croix River valley. A pearl button boom was also underway\, employing thousands of ‘clammers’ and button factory workers who labored in the business of making buttons and decorative elements for jewelry and watches. The pearl button industry was short-lived. Advances in plastics technology and mussel over-harvesting led to its early demise but its history is amazing and includes unique stories of locals ‘making it big’ during the pearl button boom. \nRobyn Stoller\, a long-time member of WCHS\, completed research for this topic as a volunteer for the National Park Service. Her project provided park rangers with detailed content to share with visitors and to augment an exhibit at the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway Visitor Center in St. Croix Falls. Her research brought her to the National Pearl Button Museum in Muscatine\, IA and several local museums plus many hours at a microfilm reader reading old newspaper stories on clammers and the pearl button business. \nAttend in-person at the Washington County Heritage Center OR virtually on Zoom. \nZoom Info \nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/83815017179?pwd=SU5mclRQQmo2MW9qelNGcEcrY3hBQT09 \nMeeting ID: 838 1501 7179\nPasscode: wchs
